Epi # 55 Live Baby Live with special guest, Mark Opitz

Another album deep dive, time again with a twist as we again welcome our Honoury Patron Mark Opitz, the Producer of the said album “Live Baby Live”.
A controversial release at the time in November 1991 with some critics questioning the validity of its “live credentials” Mark offers a frank and personal assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this album. Hot on the heals of the Wembley Concert, time and the huge amount of work done meant that a simple Wembley album release was not logistically possible with Management keen to release something that took into all continents of the world insofar as INXS live performances were concerned.
We also examine the underrated new track “Shining Star” and how this shaped the follow-up recordings also done by Mark on Welcome to Wherever You Are.

Epi 54: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction.

Imagine this...
It’s 2023 and all of the INXS: Access all Areas patrons and alumni are in the audience as INXS are inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame. We hear heart-wrenching speeches from Andrew regarding Michael. We tear up as Tim recounts the rise from the far landscapes of Australian tours in 1980 to the glory of selling out Wembley in 1991.
With awards in hand, the band get the opportunity to play “live” for the first time for 11 years but this time with a difference. A tasteful hologram of Michael is superimposed onto the stage as Tim, Andrew, Gary, John, and Kirk reform with their dearly lost friend for a 4 song masterclass to rubber-stamp their long-deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
So sit back, relax and hear how, what, where, and why this great band should and shall receive music's greatest award very soon and just “why” we need all of you to help!!

Epi 52: You got ’The Sin?’

So it’s December 1983 in Melbourne Australia and 3XY on the AM dial puts out the most unbelievable, hook-laden, catchy, funky, memorable 5-minute tune to ever hit my 13-year-old ears.
Who was this?
What was this?
What had I just heard, please Mr. DJ tell me at the end of the song and please, please, please don’t go to an ad! Bad luck as they immediately go to a Coco Pops jingle commercial. Eager but somewhat frightened that this propulsive and new favorite song may never be heard again, I feared these dulcet tones may be lost forever.
No Shazam App, no internet to track the song down online, and no helpful DJ to ease my concerns, all seems lost. Alas, they come back from the ads and announce the song, announce the band, and through sheer weight of caller demand to the station play the song again. With Aussie pride and fervor, the DJ says folks: “this is Original Sin by the mighty INXS”! My life was complete.
And so became my total emotional investment to these soon-to-be national treasures.
So tonight, we examine 5 minutes and 19 seconds that changed mine and the lives of many. Every vocal, every sigh, every guitar riff, and every cry shall be broken down.

Epi 51: INXS Raw n Rare

 
As INXS: Access all Areas moves forward from its 50 episode trial run, we take a step back to where it all started as a touring live act on the Northern Beaches and vital Sydney Pub scene where the band plied its trade, experimented with original tracks, and lit up the audience with timely cover songs of luminary artists of that time.
 
A new friend of the podcast Peter Toluzzi was just the man to capture the sounds of 1979 and early 1980 with his dual recordings of said tracks. The first gig aptly titled “Funky Junk” was recorded at the Alley Cat Wine Bar on June 10th, 1979, and the second “Beware the Ides of March” on March 15th, 1980.
 
So get your best headphones on, immerse yourself in a bygone era barely captured, and absorb the genesis of where the Farriss Brothers morphed into the mighty INXS with sheer guts and determination to their craft.
